BREAKING THE SCREED
DAY 1 & 2
We arrived at the Lawula Group and Bluemoon construction project site where we were assigned tasks for the day.
We removed fittings (bathroom and kitchen) in the houses.
The reason for removing the screed was due to the incorrect screed thickness (according to the contractor). The removed screed was 30mm thick whilst the contractor wanted a 50mm thick screed. It therefore had to be redone to correct the dimension hence all the fittings had to be removed to enable replacing it.

BUILDING THE SCAFFOLDING
DAY 3
We built the scaffolding.
Our team was working together with other two teams to build the scaffolding for builders to use to reach higher levels when building the unfinished houses.
After Lunch; We helped out with setting out.
The tasks were clearing up the site, using lime and fishlines to draw the building lines and site boundaries, these consecutive activities were followed by excavations (with the help of a tractor)

SOIL TESTING AND SURVEYING
Day 4&5
We set more houses and tested the soil to find the amount of compaction needed on different positions of the house. We got to experience using a penetrometer for the first time, as a result, we learned a lot from that.
we learned that the penetrometer is calibrated from 0-1000mm and the faster penetrometer penetrates the soil, the more the soil needs to be compacted.
Moreover, for surveying, we used a dumpy level where we used the lowest height of the trench, added the depth of the excavation and subtracted the thickness of the footing for evenly leveled foundation footings

ABOUT
TEAM JULIET
Our team consisted of 3 members majoring in BSC Construction Economics and Management.
Mamello Sekasha (Team leader): second year student.
Tinotenda Ndurunduru (Deputy team leader) third year student and Khaya Mahlangu (Team member) first year student.
Being part of the community build enabled us to get a first hand experience of construction site work and we got a chance to apply what we learned in class in real life. It was an exhilarating experience!
